About Year Zero

Over 200,000 Haitian lives were lost on Jan 12, 2010. The earthquake that struck on of the poorest countries in the world measured 7.0 in magnitude, effectively returning Haiti back to it’s starting point, Year Zero. The amount of damage experienced can be statistically measured but it is only through stories that it can be felt. This website aims to reintroduce us to the stories from the aftermath of the earthquake as told by two photographers, Carlos Cazalis and Nadav Neuhaus. Both men went to Haiti to document the devastation that had occurred, returning when able and experiencing the deep-rooted spirit of the Haitian people first hand. Both were understandably moved by what they saw and heard each time they returned. This website also aims to take the story a step further, by allowing those effected by the earthquake to share their stories and experiences by tagging their words or pictures on social media with the hashtag #haitiyearzero. It is our hope that those who visit this site gain an understanding of the earthquake’s aftereffects and share their own stories to give others a better understanding as well.
